SQPN Newsletter 30 September 2008


Ever wonder why we send these newsletters? (yes, yes, I know, every week, generally on Monday, yes, yes, you’re so clever…grumble, grumble…) We want to make sure you know about anything new, and to point at things that maybe you haven’t looked at, shows you haven’t listened to. And we sure got that covered this time – after brief hiatus we have The Catholic Hack, Secrets of both Harry Potter and Battlestar Galactica, Dr Paul checks in with two new SaintCasts, the Healthy Catholic returns, this time for your ear-buds, and Father Roderick takes on broadcast radio with a new show in Dutch! Plus there are other new podcasts and videos, daily prayers, daily Bible readings, daily Mass, and more. C’mon. Plenty of new stuff here. Just pick something. It’s all good. Trust me. I’m here to help. Oh, and if you haven’t voted in the nomination phase of the PodCast awards, have a look at our suggestions near the end of this letter.

Katholiek Leven

Op maandag 29 september a.s. start het nieuwe programma “Katholiek Leven”, met pastoor Roderick Vonhögen, te beluisteren tussen 18:00 en 18:30 uur.

And if that doesn’t say it all – well, I guess you don’t read Dutch very well. What it means is that Father Roderick has added yet another show to his credits. It’s Katholiek Leven – Catholic Life for the rest of us. Similar is style and feel to Daily Breakfast, but in recorded in Dutch and broadcast at 6pm (noon US Eastern) on Radio Maria, 650 on the AM dial. While several of the Radio Maria affiliates around the world have audio feeds, the this one does not. However, if you can’t tune in, Father Roderick is good enough to record them live on the uStream SQPN-Live channel and post the recordings. Check out these links.

Podcast Awards 2008

Don’t worry – it’s not Monday already. But you know how I mentioned the importance of nagging? Well, this is kind of a nudge. See, the 2008 Podcast Award nominations are open, and though none of the podcasters do what they do in order to win awards, it is a good, easy way to get free publicity for the network – and a way that you can help.

The awards are handled in two phases – nominations in September and voting to follow in October on the most frequently nominated shows (think of it as a run off election). There are several categories, and you can nominate shows until 2359 hours (11:59pm) on Tuesday 30 September 2008. If you plan to nominate a show and don’t have a choice for each of the categories, or you can just spend a couple of minutes to help promo SQPN, here are some suggestions.

SQPN – Leading the Way in Catholic New Media

People, people, people! This SQPN thing is supposed to be a team effort. The podcasters produce the content, but you’ve got your part to play, too. You’ve got to nag the podcasters into producing more! I mean, just look at this. There’s only, one, two, three….mumble, count, count….hmmmm…. You know, there’s actually quite a lot here. There’s more travelogues through the Iberian peninsula, yet another show crossing the century mark, recommendations for the 2008 Podcast Awards, plus the usual run of great audio, great video, great articles and more. Huh. Looks like some of you have been nagging. Good job!

Baldwin Project – Christianity for Old Children

While the Baldwin Project is not associated with SQPN, it is still a new media project with material that may interest SQPN listeners. Their mission is to put resources online for parents and teachers, and they are focussing initially on literature for children. They are working to do online what James Baldwin did in print at the beginning of the last century: bringing classics to children. Many of these works are of interest to young Catholics, and stories of the saints are well represented. Values aside, a child’s reading and language skills are sure to improve through perusal of these works. If you’ve got children old enough to read or read to, you might check these out.

The whole thing started March 18th 2006 when David heard the Rosary Army Catholic Podcast and decided,
I can do that.
(Jennifer) But little did he know that Allyson would squash the project flat.

I would rather sew all day and teach.”

think of all the people we could reach.”

This has been a…well…an odd week. Time shifting priests in foreign lands…high priced demolition debris…or is it a relic…I don’t have a satellite dish, yet I listen to a satellite radio network…odd, just…odd. And to top it all off there’s 12 new podcasts and 10 videos, plus daily prayers, daily Bible readings, daily Mass, ebooks, and more. Oh, well. Can deal with odd as long as the shows keep a-comin’.

Cloffice Debris on Offer

This past week saw the failure of the international Save the Cloffice campaign by Rosary Army fans; there are links to videos of the sad results elsewhere in this newsletter. At one point Chief Demolion Officer Greg pulled a piece of paper off the wall. A piece of the Marian-blue Cloffice paint came off with it, a chip about one inch square. Some members of the live ustream audience immediately suggested that it be put on eBay. Greg thought it was a ridiculous idea, but when the chatter reached the point of a “double-dog” dare, well, he couldn’t resist. SQPN – Leading the Way in Catholic New Media

SQPN Newsletter 11 August 2008


In case you’ve been living under a rock (which would explain that hair, I guess; you can’t get a brush under that rock??), you may not have heard that Sirius Satellite Radio has got big news about a new program. And it’s going to affect SQPN. See below for details, along with information about the 14 new podcasts, 10 videos, and other great content from SQPN this past week.

Sirius Upgrades

In a major move for Sirius Satellite Radio, Rosary Army, and SQPN, Greg and Jennifer Willits announced that they are going to host a new show on Sirius. Broadcasting 15 hours a week, from 11am to 2pm Eastern time, Monday thru Friday, the hosts of the Rosary Army will become the hosts of The Catholics Next Door, While the show will branch well beyond the content of the podcast, the Wilits’s will bring what has made their show so popular – the open living of their faith in the work-a-day world. It goes on the air in September.

Sirius is a radio service that is broadcast via satellite, and is available by special radio receivers throughout North America. There is also an online audio stream so it is available anywhere that has an internet connection. Other shows available via the service’s Catholic Channel include The Catholic Guy with Lino Rulli and the Busted Halo show with Father Dave Swyer. Sirius is a subscription service, no free channels are available, and we won’t be able to smuggle uStream cameras into the studio.

What does this mean for SQPN in general? Well, we don’t know yet. Greg has said that the RA apostalate of twine rosaries, and the RA podcast will continue. However, researching and preparing a daily three-hour show is a full-time job. Since the network’s incorporation, Greg has worked as the Chief Operating Officer, and Jennifer has served at the Chief Financial Officer; much of that work will now have to be handled by other people. Overall, I’d say that the to-do lists of the SQPN board members just got longer.

You’ll hear more about the new show and the changes to SQPN on the shows listed below, and in the coming weeks. For now we just all need to wish the Willitses the best, and pray for God’s guidance for the them and all the network’s efforts. Oh, and since they’re converting an upstairs bedroom room into a studio, Jennifer plans to dismantle the Cloffice and turn it into a simple bedroom closet. Do your part – contact the Georgia Division of Historic Preservation and demand that the Cloffice be listed as an historic site and thus legally off-limits to re-modeling. I’m sure Jennifer will thank you in the long run.

• three 12 ounce cans diced tomatoes (one kilogram)
• one 32 ounce can of V8 vegetable juice (one litre)
• 12-15 washed fresh basil leaves
• salt and pepper
• 1.5 sticks butter (6 ounces; 170 grams)
• 1 pint heavy cream (8 ounces; 228 grams)

Combine tomatoes, juice, basil, salt and pepper in large soup pot and simmer 30 minutes. Remove in small batches and blend until smooth. Return to pot and add butter and cream. Heat through. Serve with basil leaves as a garnish. Serves 8.

Hmmmmm….I want to make this newsletter thing a real thing, ya know, an event, an internet phenomenon. But what? What will catch the attention of the masses…. Hmmmm…. I got it! Ahem. “I newsletter, therefore I am!” Yes? No? Yes? No, huh. Harumph! Well, how about this – I got 9 new podcasts and 4 videos from 10 shows, daily prayers, daily Bible readings, daily Mass, and more. If that’s not phenomena enough for you, well, I just don’t know what you want.

Meet SQPN

He’s known as the iPadre to some, the Steaming Priest to others, but he’s Father Jay Finelli, pastor of the Church of the Holy Ghost in Tiverton, Rhode Island, and an integral part of SQPN.

After graduating from Woonsocket High School, Jay attended Rhode Island Junior College in order to follow a life long dream of being a veterinarian; but God had different plans. Feeling a call to another life, Jay spent his three years in college discerning his future, meanwhile working weekends and summers at family owned dry cleaning plants. Answering the call, Jay attended Holy Apostles College and Seminary for one year, and then entered the Franciscan Order (O.F.M.) based in Kennebunkport, Maine. After completing his novitiate, Jay continued his studies in philosophy and theology, but left the Franciscans before final vows, and returned to his home diocese. Father Jay was ordained in the Diocese of Providence, Rhode Island, and recently celebrated 16 years in the priesthood.

Father Jay got online in September 1995, began developing websites a month later, and his diocese was one of the first to be part of the web. From the beginning, Father Jay saw the internet as another form and forum for ministry, and podcasting became a natural outgrowth; his first episode appeared on 1 September 2005, and he recently posted episode 119 of the iPadre podcast.

Pope John Paul II said that we are in need of a new evangelization. Podcasting is a small part of this new work of evangelization. All of us need to do our part in spreading the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ.

When not ministering to his parish, or the online community, Father Jay’s hobbies include live steam railroading, Mac computers, web design, and podcasting. He loves the outdoors, especially time in the mountains and woods. For examples of his work, check these links.
