Saw something the other day on one of those “News of the Weird” sites. Didn’t believe it to begin with, but I guess it’s true - there are people out there who still don’t listen to SQPN podcasts. Seriously! I was shocked, too. People allowed to drive, vote and hold public office, but so out of touch that they’ve never heard of Catholic new media. Hunh. Well, bless their hearts, at least we know what’s what. Why, just this week alone there’s been 11 new podcasts and 5 videos from 14 shows, plus daily prayers, daily Bible readings, daily Mass, new ebooks, an online game, and more. Hard to believe there’s people missing out on this, huh?

Meet a Podcaster
Lisa Hendey

SQPN listeners probably know Lisa Hendey best from her interview podcast Catholic Moments, which posted episodes #56 and #57 this past week. But the podcast is only the latest example of her work to spread the faith in new media.

Lisa is the founder and editor of CatholicMom.com, a web site devoted to family life. Started in 1999 to help her better understand her faith and thus better teach it to her children, Lisa’s site now gets thousands of visitors each month with 30+ contributors covering everything from infancy to empty nest, all focused on how to live a Catholic life in a modern family. Offshoots include Christian Coloring.com and online Sunday school materials. She applies her webmastering skills to the Saint Anthony of Padua parish and school web sites, to the prison ministry Samaritan Women, and to the HIV/AIDS support group All About Care. Since you have to be pretty organized to manage all this and a family too, Lisa shares that part of her life at the blog Productivity @ Home where she muses and advises on personal productivity.

Lisa is a regular contributor to Catholic Exchange, Catholic Online, and Catholic.net. Her articles have appeared in the National Catholic Register, Our Sunday Visitor, Faith and Family, Canticle Magazine, Grapevine Magazine, and Kids’ Ark Magazine. She is working on her first non-fiction book; no surprise, it concerns faith and parenting. A Lifetime Member of Weight Watchers International, Lisa is interested in the connection between spiritual and physical fitness, and works daily to incorporate her faith and fitness disciplines.

Lisa and her husband Greg, an Emergency Physician, live in Fresno, California with their sons, Eric and Adam. The couple met and married at the University of Notre Dame, and they share a passion for Irish football. Following Notre Dame, Lisa earned a Master’s Degree in Human Resource Development from Vanderbilt University. She worked for several years in Human Resources for non-profit entities including Kaiser Permanente and Vanderbilt University, specializing in recruitment and corporate training. She then “retired” to care for her children at home.

One of her lifelong goals has been to promote the work of men and women who use their talents to share the faith - authors, musicians, and people in the pews who do special things to share their love of Christ. CatholicMom and Catholic Moments are examples of that promotion in action as she uses new ways to spread the good news. Lisa writes that she is “trying to fully embrace all that today’s technology offers in order to play my own small part in the Holy Father’s call to New Evangelization.”

This is a partial list of Lisa’s presence on the interweb. Take a deep breath, and….

vox populi

What a true community we had. In that Mass I felt for the first time not a distant listener, but a member of something blessed and true, part of a body bound together not just by technology or blogs or podcasts, but by love. In short, I came away not only excited about new media, but with a greater enthusiasm to love and serve our Lord. Thank you again for your work, and never grow weary in well-doing! - Jaime, commenting on the mid-day Mass at the Catholic New Media Celebration and saying it a lot better than I could

4Marks.com

If you listen to recent podcasts, you’ve heard mention of 4Marks, and you may have wondered what folks are talking about. Let me give you the nickel tour.

4Marks.com is a Catholic version of Facebook or MySpace, with all the good that can be done on a social site, but without the annoyances. A spin-off of the CatholicMatch web portal, 4Marks isn’t just for singles, or even just for lay people - everyone’s invited, and lot of folks are already showing up.

4Marks has the usual social-site ways of connecting to friends, leaving notes on walls, that sort of thing. But, having placed themselves under the patronage of Saint Peter the Apostle, they also provide reference material, daily lessons and inspiration, blog hosting, full articles by users (which may wind up in their magazine), and sharing of audio and video by members. They aspire to be a hub for Catholic new media, they block offensive content, won’t delete a priest’s title from his name - and no one’s going to slap you with a trout! Your participation is encouraged, your inspiration is welcomed.

Pope John Paul II said, “It is important, therefore, that the Christian community think of very practical ways of helping those who first make contact through the Internet to move from the virtual world of cyberspace to the real world of Christian community.” 4Marks is working to answer this challenge.

Well, I got good news and bad news and good news and good news and good news. First, the reason the newsletter is late is because the Catholic New Media Celebration was both a hoot and a holler (trust me; those are good things). The bad news is that it’s over. But the good news is that we will be posting audio and video from the Celebration, and there’s going to be another one so you can go, and until then we’ve got lots of great SQPN content. There’s 14 new podcasts and 7 videos from 15 shows, plus daily prayers, daily Bible readings, daily Mass, weekly cooking, and more.

Louisa, The Accidental Archaeologist, had some laptops connected to uStream, and you can Click to Watch part 1 and part 2.
Next Week in Atlanta!

There’s going to be this thing in Atlanta next weekend. Big thing. Kind of a combination learning experience and party. They’re calling it the Catholic New Media Celebration. Maybe you’ve heard of it? (If not, it means that Greg Willits doesn’t have your email address.) There’s still time to make your plans, and there’s certainly a place for you. You’ll meet people you’ve only heard, and some you’ve only heard about. And if you are going and want to help, you’ll want to contact nancykwood@bellsouth.net. Either way, you should come. You’ll love it.
